This design project began on the desk of a talented illustrator, who created a draft logo. This draft then needed to be fine tuned and incorporated into the design of a business card.

To elucidate the work of a Luthier, I combined elements of the logo with its inspiration and one of the more prominent forms a Luthier works with—a violin scroll. To strengthen the more contemporary and vibrant identity of the client, I used a bright colour on a white background, while honouring the tradition the craft is steeped in by using serif type.

'4tomorrow' is a non-profit organization based in Paris whose goal is to foster the capacity to understand global social issues through creativity. Their main project, Poster for Tomorrow, is a yearly poster contest based on human rights issues, with the objective of encouraging people to create posters in order to stimulate debate.

The Right to Education was the theme of the 2011 poster competition, calling for a right to education for all. My approach to the design of the poster was based on looking at ways education can or has changed individuals’ circumstances for the better, specifically for females, as this is the most vulnerable population group around the globe.

This project was done for and in collaboration with the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC. In order to update more than 300 volunteers on crucial training material, an e-learning module was developed for online delivery. The module development included adapting training content into slides which progressed in consistent, functional and dynamic pace, as well as inclusion of photography and narration. The above are a narrow selection of slides from the completed module.

With so many mediums to look at one's body of work, many would argue that a printed portfolio is no longer needed for presentation. Still, any opportunity to create and design should be taken and at the beginning of 2011 I ventured to collect my favourite work into a printed portfolio book, keeping a similar aesthetic and design principles between my online and offline presence.

What is Feminism?
Feminism is advocacy of the rights of women, the call for the eradication of inequality between the sexes.

The following are some interesting numbers to ponder:
35.6% is the after-tax poverty rate for single mothers
1 in 2 women in Canada will experience violence during their lifetime
79% of girls are victims of reported family-related sexual assaults
55 is the percentage representing homeless girls, youth aged 12 to 18, that has been sexually abused
70.5% is the amount women earned in 2005 on every dollar men earned
22.1% is the section of Canadian Parliament for which women account, even though they comprise 50.4% of the population
130 million is the number of women that are affected by female genital mutilation (FGM) globally
4 million is the number of women and girls around the world that are bought and sold into marriage, prostitution, or slavery every year

The statistics reveal a consistent and systemic problem of inequality, which operates on all levels and in all parts of the world.

In this semester-long thesis project I explored how Communication Design can assist Feminism in regaining its respectful name, so that it may, in turn, continue to achieve its mandate.

“In the age of the Internet, politics migrates from its top-down, hierarchical, one-way, passive industrial form, becoming something fluid, networked, participatory, immediate, resistant, democratic.” —Michael Y. Dartnell

In a world interconnected through a vast network of communication technologies, increasing numbers of the public turn to online activity in order to effect change in their communities, both regional and global.

Generally regarded as politically disengaged, young adults are particularly savvy with new media technologies and pose a great potential to becoming civically active. Designing interaction in participatory online culture may provide the platform needed in order to propel this audience into action. This four-month long project sought to examine these new media tools, integrating them into the theoretical components, which hold the key to advancing civic engagement in today’s youth.

The audience was identified as youth ranging from 15-25 years old. Further research revealed several websites already existing with the same aim in mind, that is, encourage youth to become more politically active and civically engaged. None, however, seemed to harness the power of social networking and user-generated content, which is where the real power of the internet lies, and certainly much of the interest of youth today.

The resulting design considered the need of a bottom up approach: a ‘by youth, for youth’ website, which allowed for interactivity and user-centered, user-generated content.

“You are capable of deciding your own destiny, the question is, which path will you choose?” —Startrek

An exercise in creating an identity for myself, these business cards were designed with myself in both the designer and client seat.

The three main ideas I explored were the marriage of digital and traditional techniques as approaches I use in my designs, the exploration of name origins as the basis of identity, and a more abstract view of the self.
